Caution is a legal term for a warning given
by police questioning a suspect, which until
recently in the UK had to be couched in the
following terms: "You do not have to say
anything unless you wish to do so, but what
you do say may be given in evidence." Persons
not under arrest must also be told that they
do not have to remain at the police station
or with the police officer but that if they
do, they may obtain legal advice if they
wish. A suspect should be cautioned again
after a break in questioning and upon arrest.
