- Caution is a legal term for a warning given
- by police questioning a suspect, which until
- recently in the UK had to be couched in the
- following terms: "You do not have to say
- anything unless you wish to do so, but what
- you do say may be given in evidence." Persons
- not under arrest must also be told that they
- do not have to remain at the police station
- or with the police officer but that if they
- do, they may obtain legal advice if they
- wish. A suspect should be cautioned again
- after a break in questioning and upon arrest.
